The Lizard

If you want to know what the world would be like without the National Trust, I suggest you visit Land's End.

I don't know who runs Land's End, but it really was not what I was expecting. I thought there would be a lonely, windy promontory with a small queue of people being very British and taking it in polite turns to have their photos taken in front of the famous sign.

But the famous sign is owned by a private company, so the only way to have your photo taken next to it is to pay £9.95. And I'm not going to be snobby about the rest of it, because if I had three kids on holiday in Cornwall and it had been raining for four days straight, I would be OVERJOYED to see the Shaun the Sheep Experience.

But it hadn't been raining, so we decided to give Shaun a miss and head to The Lizard instead, which is run by the National Trust and is the southern-most point in the UK.

Lizard Point

As we walked down the hill, the Scone Sidekick spotted another camera; "oh God, you have to pay to have your picture taken here too." But he was wrong. The camera that he had seen was actually outside a Wildlife Centre where NT staff were keeping track of all the birds and other creatures that they'd spotted today. It was like being 5 years old and finding your mum in a supermarket when you thought you'd lost her.

It was a beautiful day and The Lizard is a stunning little spot. I could have sat there all day. The lighthouse at The Lizard is still working, so is run by Trinity House and not the NT. You can just about see it among the clouds in this picture:

The cafe on The Lizard is not owned by the NT - it's a concession, and concessions don't count in this highly scientific study of mine - so we decided to have an ice-cream, which was delicious.

So if you're in Cornwall, definitely make an effort to visit The Lizard - it's stunning.

The Lizard: 5 out of 5
Scones: no NT cafe but lovely ice-cream from the concession
Similarity to Land's End: 0, therefore 5 out of 5
